The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise attributed to Sun Tzu, a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician. On War is a book on war and military strategy by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831), written mostly after the Napoleonic wars, between 1816 and 1830, and published posthumously by his wife Marie von Bruhl in 1832.

On War is one of the most important treatises on political-military analysis and strategy ever written, and remains both controversial and an influence on strategic thinking.Many of the world's leaders have turned to Niccolo Machiavelli's The Art of War as a guide to the fundamentals of war, including Frederick the Great, Napoleon, as well as countless other military leaders. Limited warfare is one of the philosophies promoted in this work. Machiavelli believed that military conflict should be a last resort and should only be considered when diplomacy fails. He was also of the belief that society could only remain stable and secure with a strong state military.

During the Renaissance era, Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian diplomat, philosopher, historian, and politician. During his career, Machiavelli spent many years as a senior official in the Florentine Republic, working in diplomatic and in military affairs, but it was The Art of War that gained him the most recognition. During his lifetime, Niccolo Machiavelli was highly critical of corruption in politics, which is evident in much of his work.

About the Author

Sun Tzu is thought to have been a military general and adviser to the king of the southern Chinese state of Wu during the sixth century BCE. Although some modern scholars have called his authorship into doubt, the world's most influential and enduring treatise on military strategy, The Art of War, bears his name.
